The beach
"Praia" is the Portuguese word for beach, and the wide sandy beach at Praia da Luz has been awarded a Blue Flag for quality, safety and facilities. It slopes gently into the ocean and is shallow for some way out. At one end of the beach are rock pools which delight children with nets and buckets! There are hammock-like umbrellas for rent and the shops along the promenade include ice cream stalls and cafes.

Praia da Luz

Praia da Luz is a small quiet village where you can relax and enjoy your vacations, while giving you at the same time the opportunity to discover beautiful landscapes, fascinating and spectacular views or many other marvelous and quaint hidden spots nearby.

You can also take advantage of the different family activities available locally or within a short distance like... the Water Sports at the beach, the Zoo in Lagos, the many Water Parks in Algarve, Golf Courses, Themed Golf Parks, Tennis, Fishing, Hiking, Horseback Riding, Dolphin Watching, Scuba Diving, Organized Tours, and many more.

Luz is a very good for kids, with a wide flat beach, rock pools and a childrens’ play area at St James’ Villas

There are over 20 golf courses with reach of Luz. Boavista is 2 minutes away, Parque de Floresta about 15 minutes and the 5 star resort of Penina is only 20 minutes away. Both have fabulous spas, tennis bowls and archery etc.

Things to do in Luz

If you want action, there's plenty of sport on offer in Luz itself. For example:

Rock-pooling, banana rides, canoes, boat rides, tennis, sailing, windsurfing, gymnasium

And on the West coast, only about 30 minutes from Luz, is Carapateira, famous for windsurfing and diving. (tuition available)
